InMarch1942Quisling’sadministrationstartedtotightenthescrewsbyreinstatingaparagraphoftheconstitutionof1814prohibitingJewsfromenteringNorway,whichhadbeenrescindedin1851.AsFerguson,aBritishauthorlongresidentinNorway,writes:“AtastroketheparagraphmadethemerepresenceofJewsinNorwayacriminaloffence.”
ThelastnailinthecoffincameinOctober1942withafailedattemptbyresistancememberstogetagroupofJewsoutofNorwaybytraintoSwedenthatendedwithaborderpolicemanbeingshotdead.ThatprovidedtheexcusetostartroundingupallmaleJewsovertheageof15,swiftlyfollowedbywomen,children,thesickandelderly.NearlyhalfofNorway’sJewsweredeportedbyseatoPolandandAuschwitz.
ButsincetheNazishadoccupiedtheircountry,manybraveNorwegianshadjoinedtheresistanceandtwogroupsformedtotrytorescueasmanyoftheremainingJewsaspossibleandhelpthemtofleethecount
